Françoise Berthoud, research engineer at CNRS and head of the "Groupe de Service" EcoInfo will give a seminar on Friday June 24th at Besançon Observatory about the environmental impact of information and communication technologies.
Summary :
Information and communication technologies are considered to be potentional solutions to global warming thanks to their lowering effect on the emission of greenhouse gases generated by other sectors. ICTs have well identified direct impacts that we will present rapidly. We will also mention their indirect effects and bounces and will show that the search limited to the gain of energetic efficiency of these objects is not sufficient to determine their environmental effects.
